Last week I wrote a blog post about the basics of the Apple Vs FBI case that seems to be dominating the media. As the case still develops it seems that large tech companies have already picked sides, showing that the case is so much more than showing allegiance to justice.
Encryption is the divisive matter at the moment with the battle between security and privacy, and the vast majority of people having limited knowledge in the situation can often lead to heated debates. Recent polls appear to contradict each other. The two main polls being quoted at the moment show that the American public is far from decided in what side they stand on. The Pew Research Center has released the results of their poll which suggests that 51% of those asked believed that Apple should unlock the iPhone, with 38% saying no, Apple should not unlock the iPhone. 11% of those asked were unsure.
However, Reuters poll shows that 46% of respondents agree with Apple’s position, with only 35% standing by the FBI. 20% of the Reuters poll was undecided.
There is some discussion over if the polls can be trusted as they both have obvious allegiances and their results seem to mirror these.
So, with the general public currently undecided, where do big tech companies and influential people stand on the matter? Well it seems overall that large tech companies are siding with Apple. Even the rift between Google and Apple has been temporarily ignored for the sake of privacy and security. Google's CEO released a series of tweets to show Google's allegiance:
1/5 Important post by @tim_cook. Forcing companies to enable hacking could compromise users’ privacy— sundarpichai (@sundarpichai) February 17, 2016
2/5 We know that law enforcement and intelligence agencies face significant challenges in protecting the public against crime and terrorism— sundarpichai (@sundarpichai) February 17, 2016
3/5 We build secure products to keep your information safe and we give law enforcement access to data based on valid legal orders— sundarpichai (@sundarpichai) February 17, 2016
4/5 But that’s wholly different than requiring companies to enable hacking of customer devices & data. Could be a troubling precedent— sundarpichai (@sundarpichai) February 17, 2016
5/5 Looking forward to a thoughtful and open discussion on this important issue— sundarpichai (@sundarpichai) February 17, 2016
Jack Dorsey, creator of Twitter quickly showed his allegiance to Tim Cook and Apple in a brief tweet, which has since been retweeted over 3,500 times!
Other companies, and influential people that have shown support for Apple include:
However, it would not be fair to say that everyone favours Apple in the battle. All of the Republican Presidential Candidates have shown support with the FBI, whilst the Democratic Presidential Candidates have so far failed to state an allegiance.
Donald Trump, openly called for a boycott of Apple products until the company had agreed to provide the FBI with the software that would allow them to brute force hack the iPhone.
Boycott all Apple products until such time as Apple gives cellphone info to authorities regarding radical Islamic terrorist couple from Cal— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 19, 2016
I could take that terrorist iPhone down to Tottenham Court Road right now & they'd get into it. Safely. Apple is lying.— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) February 27, 2016
New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton co wrote an article Seeking iPhone data through the front door. Within this article Bratton and Miller provide the precedent on which this case currently stands;
Until 17 months ago, Apple held the key that could override protections and open phones. Apple used this “master key” to comply with court orders in drug, kidnapping, murder and terrorism cases. There was no documented instance of this code getting out to hackers or to the government.
More and more people are making a stand and taking sides. There are protests, and support rallies taking place all over the world. With the hearing taking place later on today, which side are you taking? Let us know in the comments below!
