As of last week, Jonathon has been at WebBoss for over a year now. This blog tells his story of working at the company so far...
Ironically, I first got my foot in the door at WebBoss well over a year ago by being in the right place at the right time. An illustration commission came in for a client at WebBoss, something I happen to have a background in, and so I was hired!
It was fun, but certainly one of the more challenging illustration jobs I had worked on and I learnt a lot from it. I spent a long time working on it whilst working at my (now previous) job in retail. I wasn't doing a lot of freelance Illustration work at that time, so it was nice to be working on something I enjoyed.
At this point, the WebBoss office was quite small and often quiet with barely a handful of people on the main floor. I was only ever in the office when working on the Illustrations, but I found myself enjoying the time there more and more with the WebBoss employees, switching between digital painting, making coffee and learning more about the company. It was during this time of illustrations that the company moved offices and a hint of something big was about to happen.
Slow but steady
Slowly the team began to grow. What was originally a skeleton team of 3 people had doubled in size by March 2015. 5 designers, and a manager had been hired and were slowly entering the team. Then one day, I walked into the office and the workforce had doubled, it was at this point my illustration commission was ending.
Thankfully, at this point I was comfortable enough with the WebBoss system to take on a now much needed role in Tech Support and leave the majority of Illustrations to the designers such as Jake and Ciara, who have longer experience than myself. This has enabled me to provide quick responses and advice to our customers and build relationships with them and the team. The change in role has been a challenge for me, but it has been fun to learn more about the system (including the hidden easter eggs!) and see the system grow with more varied input.
My job has since extended out to areas such as social media management and blogging. Having a variety of areas to work on is great as I enjoy the balance, as I can be helping a customer one minutes and laughing at memes to share socially the next.
As WebBoss continues to grow I think I'd like to focus more on the blog writing side of my career for the future. (Watch this space as new blog something something blah blah trees) As it's something I really enjoy doing not only as a job but as a hobby too.
Overall, I’ve really enjoyed watching the company grow and have been fortunate enough for things to only get better for my career here with what I do and getting on with the amazing (yet slightly crazy) people I work with. Hopefully, I now haven't cursed it by typing it out loud and it'll continue the rising pattern!
