2017 is the year of change (we know everyone says that every year) but this year we should mean it! Why not make 2017 your year and do the things you’d always say you’d do but never got around to? Like starting a blog! There are so many blogs online now, anyone can start one. And it’s not as scary as it seems, we promise.
This can be the largest obstacle to get passed, but once you’ve done it you’ll be flying. Convincing yourself to take the leap and put yourself out there is easier said than done. First, you must think ‘why?’. Why do you want to start a blog? Is it for business? Money? Pleasure? This will help you decide what you want out of this whole blogging thing and will influence many aspects of it. Not to mention it will give you the motivation that you need to get started. Think and visualise: ‘What is the end goal of this?’.
Once you’re motivated enough… what’s the next step? Well, it’s time for you to get started! You’ve most likely already thought about this as you’re already considering starting a blog by reading this one; what should you write about? Now obviously, this could be the make or break of your blog. However, most importantly, you must enjoy writing your blog. Keep that in mind throughout the whole process.
If you already have a WebBoss website for your business you can simply activate the Blog module to get started! This includes everything you need to make your blog attractive and easy to use by your website visitors, such as subscribe options, archiving and related blogs.
Once everything’s set up, you’ll be ready to start blogging! Here’s some little tips before you start…
- Make it look pretty – We know not everyone is a skilled web designer (by the way we also offer this service if you need a hand) but there needs to be some format to your blog. Think about the layout. Is it practical and does it look good? Choose the font carefully as well as the colour. Is it easy to read? Select your pictures with caution. We’re sure you know about copyright infringement so we’ll spare you the details, but be careful you don’t steal anyone’s pictures (not sure if your images are safe to use? Here is a blog where we explain the do's and don'ts of using images you have found online). Good news for you is that there are many stock photo sites which are free and accessible.
- Read other blogs – The best way to learn how to blog, is to read other blogs. It will help you get the gist of what people like and the tone to use. Although, be sure to make the content your own.
- Social media - It is highly recommended that you start using social media if you don’t already use it. It’s a great way to share your blog and get the word out there. You’ll find a great deal of views will come from those who have seen it on social media. Not only that, but you’ll find a lot more about that type of audience that is viewing your content. Meaning you can edit future content to suit your audience. So, get to sharing!
At the end of the day, when it comes to getting started with blogging, it is as the great Shia LaBeouf once said “Just Do It”. It’s not the end of the world if it goes wrong (which is unlikely), so just bite the bullet and go for it. As long as you enjoy writing and creating your blog, you’ll be fine and the hard work will pay off.
